The Headache Detective: Tracking Down the Root Causes
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen my latest #WickedGoodWellness tip. If not, keep reading…
Today’s wicked good wellness tip is about headaches.
For those of you who may not know, I grew up with naturopathic medicine. It’s been a part of my lifestyle since childhood. Because I’ve grown up with naturopathic medicine, I approach health differently. To better explain what I mean, let’s talk about headaches.
When I experience a headache, my first instinct isn't to grab an Advil or Tylenol.
Instead, I consider the root causes. And I run through a list of quick questions…
✅ Have I had enough water today?
✅ Did I have too much coffee?
✅ Did I sleep well last night?
✅ When did I eat last - Is my blood sugar low?
✅ What did I eat last – is it a food sensitivity?
✅ Is it something in my environment – indoors or outdoors?
✅ Could it be hormonal?
✅ Are my eyes tired from staring at screens?
✅ What’s my posture like right now?
✅ Where in my body am I feeling tight or tense?
✅ Am I feeling stressed?
Headaches can come from many options… stress, dehydration, low blood sugar, poor posture, seasonal allergies, or even dietary triggers.
While this may sound like a lot, with practice, it becomes second nature ~ just like brushing your teeth!
Once I identify the cause, I’ve got a holistic toolkit to take care of it… if drinking water or taking a break doesn’t help then I’ve got acupressure, stretching, EFT tapping, breathwork, essential oils… maybe a niacin flush… lots of options that will get to that root cause.… ✅
So next time you experience a headache, I encourage you to pause and reflect on your own habits. Often, addressing the root cause can provide relief without jumping straight to meds.
Remember, our bodies are always talking to us, right? We just need to listen.
